The Beginning...

Well, here is my first blog entry. Consider this an insight into my mind - the things that get stuck in my head and the different thoughts that I am mulling.

Why blogging you may ask? To be honest, I thought it would be a good opportunity to put some ideas down as I try and work out what I intend to do in the future. One thing I am considering at the moment is going back to uni (again) to study a post-graduate degree in Journalism. This would present an opportunity to continue to write on areas that interest me - such as history, politics, music and sports - while earning an income to support my livelihood (sounds like a good idea, right?). This would allow me to write on a range of topics, continue researching various projects, and continue to learn in this ever changing world.

So, here is my first substantive entry:

The Past Week In Review

Well, here are a few current events that have been perking my interest of late.

  • NBA Draft 2009: The Milwaukee Bucks picked Brandon Jennings with the #10 pick last Friday morning (Thursday night in the US). To be honest, I really like this pick considering who had been taken prior to the Bucks being on the clock. A young, exciting, athletic point guard who oozes potential was much better than a safe pick. The franchise has been in need of some buzz and this young man has the capability to bring that to the table. A boom or bust move by GM John Hammond appears to have bought a welcome relief to the majority of Bucks fans. Hopefully this year the pick will pay-off as the Bucks are overdue for some good luck.
  • To continue on the above subject, the Australian basketball players that nominated for the draft this year did not have the best night out. Patty Mills plummeted into the late second round to Portland, while Joe Ingles and Luke Nevill went undrafted. Hopefully Patty Mills can make a sound impression on the Portland decision makers during the summer league, as he has the potential to be a solid contributor in the NBA. For Ingles and Nevill, I imagine they will get a summerleague invite to show their wares, hopefully they can show teams what they missed out on
  • The Geelong Cats keep on winning, making it 13 straight this season. While the game on the weekend was not the most comprehensive win, the team keeps going from strength to strength. I will be writing a preview to the highly anticipated top of the table clash between Geelong and St Kilda later in the week. So stay tuned.
  • On a more serious note, the fallout from the protests in Iran to the recent elections has drawn attention to the effectiveness of internet tools such as Twitter and Facebook in its ability to provide an uncensored perspective of events. Twitter was used effectively to show the world the extent of the Iranian governments crackdown on the protester, who were challenging the results of the elections. The use of these websites as a medium to circumvent state controlled media releases has provided people with a new and unique insight into such events, drawing new interest into the plight of people fighting opression and standing up for their rights. It will be interesting to see how these type of social networking sites are used in the future for similar events, and how the internet will evolve as a medium to provide different insight into news events.
Well, I have lots more to talk about but I have unfortunately left it a little late tonight. I shall update again soon with more of the thoughts that are littering my mind. Good night.
